CONTENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
A Content Management System (CMS) is a software program developed to allow for the creation and/or manipulation of web site content, such as web site copy, image (and other file) upload and reference in web pages and the creation and manipulation of site wide (or category wide) content, including headers, footers, menus, news blocks, etc. CMSs are generally designed with a "front end", the part of the CMS that the general public who visit a site see, and a "back end" or "admin area", where site administrators are able to log in and alter site content and layout through an administrator interface. While there are some CMSs that are "flat" (i.e., the content is created in "flat pages" on the server in languages such as .html and .php - and there is no communication with databases for page content), many CMSs are "database driven", with code such as .php communicating with a database to pull site content into pages for delivery to visitors (or search engines).
