HOW TO USE THIS WIKI

[Please note that this page should be read in tandem with our FormattingRules page.]

Viewing Pages

You can view any pages you want to on this wiki just by clicking the page links.

Commenting on Pages

You need to sign up for a user account here, in order to leave comments at the bottom of pages. Why? If the comments were "open", this site would be full of automated bot spam and wouldn't be of much value to anyone.

When you are logged into a page that allows comments, you will see the following text at the bottom of the page

Editing Pages

You need to sign up for a user account here, in order to alter pages or add new pages to this wiki.

When you are logged into a page that you are allowed to edit, you will see the following text at the bottom of the page:

You can either click on the "Edit Page" link at the page bottom, or double click on the page itself to open the page for editing.

Also, check out this PageStatus page, that explains the permissions for the pages on this site. If you see a page without its PageStatus on the bottom, it means that we haven't gotten to this page yet to classify it.

Creating Pages

Creating pages is easy. First make sure the page doesn't already exist (by checking out the PageIndex) and then type the desired page name in your browser URL field. If the page doesn't exist, the wiki will ask you if you want to create it.

Note - you must be logged in to add a page.

When you create a page, your page will be added automatically to the PageIndex link, but you will need to add the names of the categories you want your new page to be found for at the bottom of your new page (using the formatting in the code snippet immediately following). You can "grab" the code snippet below for your own use. When you click the "Grab" button, the code should open up in your default text editor program (assuming your browser permissions aren't set too high). The code snippet following shows an example of the necessary page code for a page you create that you want linked to the Blog and LinkBuilding Categories.

=====MY LINK BUILDING BLOG=====

Blah, blah, blah (Write a really good description here - and as unbiased as possible.)

My link building blog can be found [[http://www.searchenginecollege.com/blog.htm here]].

PageStatus: OpenPage

Note that your page will have a status of "OpenPage" until our staff are able to review it. For information about the status classifications and how they affect the abilities of editors to edit and comment on pages, see PageStatus.

For more specific formatting instructions, please visit our FormattingRules page.

User Pages

Also, please note that you need to create your own user page before you begin adding pages. The system will automatically create you a page with your WikiName (e.g. a wiki page of searchenginewiki.com/JohnDoe for John Doe, if he signs up) and we want you to simply put a bit of information about yourself. It doesn't have to be extensive, just your name, perhaps your job title/company and your interest in the industry so that the wiki users can see who is creating/editing these resources and why. The other reason your user page is important is that if Wiki admins need to contact you about an entry or respond to an inquiry, they will leave a comment on your user page.

Signing Up

To sign up for a user account, simply go to UserSettings and fill in the following four fields, type the Captcha image text in the provided field (all captcha words are to be typed lower-case), and then click on the register button.

1. Your WikiName (for credibility purposes, please use FirstnameLastname)
2. Password
3. Confirm password
4. Your email address

The four fields just mentioned look like this on the UserSettings page:

After you sign up, you will be returned to the UserSettings page and you will see your WikiName at the upper right of the page (in the main horizontal menu). To begin editing, just go to the page you want to edit and either double click on the page, or click on the edit button at the bottom of the page. NOTE, if you don't see an edit option at the bottom of the page, it means that this page has been locked from editing by our staff. Also note the PageStatus of the page you want to edit, as some pages do not allow editing.

WikiName Issues

If your preferred WikiName is taken, you will need to create a different one. If a WikiName has been created by another editor using your legal name or identity, please contact us so we can address this. If you are an industry personality and your preferred WikiName has a page already dedicated (e.g. as part of our Personalities category), please contact us so we can set you up with that WikiName and direct access to your page, closing it off to editing by others.

Logging In

If you already have a Wiki user account and want to log in, click on the Login link towards the top of the page (before the Help link). You'll be taken to the UserSettings page. Scroll down to the Login/Register area as shown in the image above and enter your WikiName and password. Then press Login.

Logging Out

When you've finished editing or creating a page, you can log out by simply click on the UserSettings link towards the top of the page (to the left of the Help link). Please note that this will not entirely log you out, but take you to the UserSettings page and to completely log out of the wiki, you will then need to click on the Logout button about halfway down the UserSettings page.
